Abstract: | We can choose to view a company as a (money-making) machine or as a (learning, adapting) living organism, self-sustainable within its co-produced environment. The difference between such two views is essential. Machines and organisms behave differently. Machines are all commands, instructions and programs, while organisms are all about environment, conditions and nourishment. The notion of living company goes well beyond simplistic metaphors of brain, heart and soul. Such concepts, to be useful, have to become operational, subject to strategic enhancement of the company, not just of its undoubtedly living components. Our essay is about the life of the enterprise (or corporation), not about the lives of individuals. It is submitted here Baťa Co. was a living organization, an organism, "killed" externally at the peak of its health and growth, not because of its internal exhaustion, aging, non-adaptability and sclerosis - the plagues of some modern enterprises. |
